Add-ons in FireFox 3.0b5

18 04 2008

I decided to toss FireFox 3 on my workstation to see what broke—and unfortunately, almost everything broke.

I use quite a few add-ons; however, the most useful of my add-ons are all toast. :(

  • del.icio.us Bookmarks
  • Fasterfox
  • Firebug
  • FireShot
  • TinyUrl Creator

There are a few that seem to survive; however, without FireBug and del.icio.us, I just can’t survive.

That aside, there is one very cool 3.0b5 add-on—IETab.  The add-on uses filters and/or the context menus to open up Internet Explorer tabs within FireFox.  Now, when browsing SharePoint Portal or other MSIE-only sites, I never have to leave FireFox.  It’s FANTASTIC.

I hope that, by the time 3.0 is released out of beta and into production, that a few more of the add-on developers have spent the time and upgraded their tools.  There are so many quality add-ons available (the biggest advantage, I think, to IE) that I had to see those fall behind.

Actually the Del.icio.us folks have a beta available for Firefox 3.0b4 and b5 (running fine here on 64-bit Linux); you can snag it at the Yahoo group for the project (it’s not an official release yet): http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/delicious-firefox-extension/

Firebug 1.1.0 (labeled a “beta” ;) also works on Firefox 3.0b5, available at http://www.getfirebug.com/releases/

I feel your pain — when I first cranked up FF3 I whimpered a little because my nicely organized bookmarks were missing and almost none of my extensions worked. Fortunately this has largely been fixed. BTW, I don’t think FF3 actually *needs* the tweaking that FF2 did that Fasterfox provided — FF3 is a *lot* faster out of the box than FF2 is and I suspect it actually includes some of the tuning Fasterfox provided.

Development for FF3 is rampant and widespread now — it’s worth it to check your extensions (or look for equivalent replacements) almost weekly as there’s almost always something new available every time I check.

Good hunting!

Actually, since the release of FF3 officially, everything is working. The only add-on that I don’t have is the TinyURL Creator (which I do miss). FireShot, Firebug, Delicious Bookmarks, etc. all work like a champ.

Hit up the add-ons pages and make sure you’re getting the newest version–FireBug works beautifully!
