abhorent comments

October 2, 2005

I find it … distrubing … that the same issues my Literature class has discussed in Monster and The Bluest Eye, issues dealing with racism and stereotyping, are so alive and well in today's society.

I'm sure many of you have heard of Bill Bennett's comment. He has written it off that it was an "example," however, when the example is so clear… you wonder if it was as clear in his mind a a solution.

To think this came from a former US Secretary of Education… I wonder what we can do, as educators and educated, to ensure that these "examples" are no longer something so easily rattled off-cuff.

As educators and the educated there is next to nothing we can do about much of anything that happens aboard this now tiny planet. Former president Reagan said it best that teachers are merely secretaries of the state. Teachers pump out whatever information the state has going at that time and wants to release to the people. So, teachers are merely mouths or talking heads for the larger corporate and public world. It so appears that teachers have no real power in anything unless they are attempting or have succeeded in running for office.
