ASP.NET 2.0 Web Config and Schema Warnings

September 28, 2006

I, quite suddenly, had around 80 errors of illformed schema information in my web.config this morning. Meh? The top error read:

<configuration xmlns=”http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0″>

Hmm, never heard of that namespace. I compiled–things worked. But errors, well, warnings. Oh! And Intellisense is broken. Joy.

Thankfully, Google is our friend.

Remove the xmlns part so it is:

<configuration>

The warnings will not show up. The “xmlns” part is added when you use Web Site Administration Tool.

I must have jumped in the web configuration tool at some point yesterday without paying much notice to it. Joyous–foiled by Microsoft again. After a bit more searching, it appears that this has been going on for quite a while now. Here are a few conversations from BETA and initial Gold release regarding this issue.

    Brilliant – I just woke up to all these messages when my deadline is tomorrow, and was dreading another ASP.NET wild goose chase. Finding the answer this quickly (i.e. Microsoft are messing with our heads) makes my morning much breezier.

    Thank you! Thank you! I was getting buried at MSDN trying to find the answer to this problem. What the ‘bleep’ were they thinking?

    It’s like someone giving you all the resources you need to build your site, but they keep forgetting about the most critical tools and resources.
