Readding Virtual Machines to Virtual Server 2005 R2

March 1, 2007

I was boggled by an error message I received after removing (by using the Virtual Server control panel) and attempting to readd a virtual machine to our Virtual Server 2005 R2 box.

After a bit of Googling, I found a TechNet article (#555567) for Virtual Server 2004, though it appears to be the same for 2005.

When you try to create a new virtual machine, the following error may appear: “The virtual machine could not be created. The virtual machine configuration could not be created. A configuration with this name already exists.”

Manual removing virtual machine (Without using Virtual Server/Virtual PC tools) and re-creating a new virtual machine with the same name create this conflict.

So, for Virtual Server, it’s at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Virtual Server\Virtual Machines“.  Remove the shortcut to the virtual server you’re readding and then you’re good to go!
