Good Bye Courier; Hello Consolas!

June 26, 2007

Since I started using Vista and Office 2007, I’ve gotten a bit more picky regarding my fonts.  I have really taken to the new Calbri fonts (as you can tell from my blog if you have the font installed).  The other odd font is I’ve taken the time to go through Visual Studio Orcas to “re-font” it using hte new Consolas font.

Consolas is the “programmers font,” even having a bit of a play on words for Console.  You can check out the Wikipedia reference at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolas.

You can see an example below from a prior LINQ posting of what the font looks like in Orcas.  To me, the font is far more pleasing on the eyes—especially since I spend my … life … looking at code.  On my LCD with ClearType enabled (and not at a JPEG’s high compression), the lines are exact and extremely crisp—even from a distance.

I’ve even gone so far as to replace Console’s font with Consolas—and am glad I did—DOS and PowerShell look far better now!
